Colloquium on Merger and Acquisition Processes

Co-sponsored by the Strategy Process and Corporate Strategy Interest Groups

Saturday, September 28 2013 9:00 – 18:00

Join us at the SMS Colloquium on M&A Process, a full-day conversation that kicks off with a retrospective glance on the future of M&A process research. Then three sessions will cover cutting-edge research on Pre-deal Processes, Post-deal Processes, and Learning and Capability Evolution. Each presentation will share with the participants the latest research ideas on M&A Process. The colloquium starts on the morning of Saturday, September 28th, so plan your travel early! We welcome all interested individuals to attend this workshop. There is no application or registration required.

The colloquium features a "theme lunch" where participants are invited to discuss their research ideas over lunch with the keynote speaker, panelists and session chairs about Pre-deal Processes, Post-deal Processes, and Learning and Capability Evolution. This unique format of interaction provides an opportunity for participants to exchange ideas with other researchers of similar interests.

Acquisition success is at least partially determined before the deal is ever done. Myriad contextual and process factors determine realizable synergies, and set the stage for much of what follows. In this panel, we focus on how pre-deal decisions and processes affect post-deal integration and outcomes.

Much of the value in M&As is lost during the integration and post-deal stage. Recent research has made good strides in identifying more effective integration processes that help to create and preserve value. In this session, we reflect on some of these recent advances and discuss the remaining gaps in our understanding of effective post-deal combination.

Panel III: Learning and Capability Evolution

M&As are part of a larger process of learning and capability regeneration. Firms acquire, borrow, and build M&A process capabilities while simultaneously acquiring, borrowing and developing new regenerative capabilities for corporate renewal. This panel addresses the role of M&A in organizational learning and capability evolution.
